Gibbs gets his groove back
After returning from a successful stint in Australia's Big Bash Twenty20 competition, Herschelle Gibbs has a busy playing schedule ahead of him.
Gibbs returned yesterday for a few days at home before jetting out to Bangladesh on Monday.
Despite his rejuvenated form following an amazing outing at the Big Bash for the Perth Scorchers, the 37-year-old ruled out the possibility of a recall to the national team. However, he said he would not turn one down should it happen.
"I really don't think it will happen that I could be called to the national team again," he said.
"If it does happen though, I will deal with it then. I had an amazing 15 years with the team."
Gibbs's last outing for the Proteas was a T20 against Pakistan in May 2010.
The former Proteas' batsman was bought by Khulna Royal Bengal last week for the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League tournament, which starts on Tuesday. O n Saturday Gibbs will be on auction for the Indian Premier League, which takes place in April. He has a reserve price of $50000.
He revealed to The Times yesterday that he has signed with an English county team for the domestic English T20 competition in June.
Due to the Scorchers making the Big Bash final, the side booked their spot in the Champions League T20 competition, which takes place in India in September.
But an impending IPL contract could prevent him from playing for the Australian side should his IPL side also qualify for the Champions League as the IPL team takes preference.
The explosive batsman said he was enjoying his stint with the Scorchers and would be looking at going back to play for them in the next Big Bash competition, which takes place in December.
He said that after the disappointment of not playing in the domestic One-Day Cup due to injury, he was glad to have had the opportunity to play in Australia.
Gibbs was full of praise for his Australian side, which assisted in raising his form, in particular opening partner Marcus North.
"I was disappointed at not having played in the 50-over tournament here at home for the Cobras, but going to the Big Bash certainly helped me a lot. Marcus North was fantastic - we just got on well," he said.
"The Big Bash was great. There was so much strong competition. The public support was fantastic and the people in Perth really treated me well."
Gibbs finished the tournament with the most half-centuries - four in seven matches - and the third-highest runs total throughout the tournament.
He is one of 30 SA players on the list for the IPL auction, which will take place on Saturday.
