Colin Montgomerie has been forced to pull out of the Italian Open due to a calf injury.
The Scot tore his left calf muscle earlier in the month and despite having taken time off to recuperate, he has not yet returned to full fitness.
The 49-year-old completed nine holes of his first round at Royal Park before being forced to throw in the towel.
"I just tried to play too soon and I just couldn't swing the club," he said.
I'm in a lot of pain. I tried, but now what it needs is rest."
