South African sheep shearer Mayenzeke Shweni was crowned world champion blade shearer on Saturday at the World Shearing Championships in Masterton, New Zealand.
Cape Wools’ spokeswoman Ona Viljoen said Shweni’s team-mate, three-time champion Zweliwile Hans, had finished second in the blade shearing division.
Shweni and Hans were full-time shearers from Sterkspruit in the Eastern Cape.
Wool shearers from 25 countries competed for the world crown in the hand and blade shearing events at the biennial competition.
Viljoen said the six-member SA team had been in New Zealand since October preparing for the event.
Sheep shearing is recognised in South Africa as a national sport and the Sheep Shearing Federation is affiliated to the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee.
