Brazil’s gymnastic federation says a 17-year-old rhythmic gymnast has died in a car accident.
The federation says Eduarda Mello Queiroz, who finished second in this year’s Brazilian championship, was killed early on Sunday in a one-car wreck in the southeastern state of Espirito Santo.
The car’s driver is in serious condition and another Brazilian gymnast, 19-year-old Natalia Gaudio, sustained minor injuries.
Brazil’s federal police say the car rolled down a small ravine and struck a tree after the driver lost control at a tight curve.
Queiroz was in the back seat and apparently was not wearing a seat belt.
Local media said they were returning from a party when the accident occurred.
No other details were immediately available.
