New Cardiff Blues rugby director Phil Davies guided his side to a 32-31 win over the Free State Cheetahs in a friendly in Bloemfontein on Saturday.
After a good week of preparation and training in South Africa, Davies fielded two separate sides in each half.
The Blues trailed 19-15 at half-time after Owen Williams and Chris Czekaj scored their tries.
They fought back after the break with further tries from Tom James and Macauley Cook.
Cook's try gave Cardiff the lead for the first time but the home side struck back with a converted try which put them back in front before Ceri Sweeney kicked a penalty in the 78th minute which sealed the victory.
