Young Bulls star killed in crash with robbers
A promising young Blue Bulls rugby player and three suspected robbers were killed at the weekend when their getaway vehicle crashed into his car, Beeld reported on Monday.
Nico van Vuuren, who played as a prop and hooker in the Bulls’ under 21 team, died at an intersection near Komatipoort in Mpumalanga on Saturday afternoon, minutes after three men had robbed a butchery.
Van Vuuren’s white Toyota Hi-Rider bakkie collided with the robbers’ Nissan 1400 bakkie. Everyone involved in the accident died on the scene, according to Joseph Mabuza, Mpumalanga transport department spokesman.
“Nico didn’t even know what hit him,” his father, also Nico, told Beeld.
“My child is dead and he didn’t do anything to deserve it. It’s not fair... it’s just not fair.”
Police spokesman Colonel Leonard Hlathi told Beeld: “We found R115,000 in cash in the Nissan bakkie, as well as two 9mm pistols.
"These robbers are thought to have been involved in various other crimes in the Lowveld area.”
