The Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU) has suspended coach John Mitchell, the Beeld reported on Friday.
The suspension follows players lodging a “list of grievances” with the GLRU, and the union has reacted by suspending the coach with immediate effect.
“The nature of the [players’] complaints is so serious that we have suspended him [Mitchell] pending further investigation,” GLRU president Kevin de Klerk told Rugby365.
Mitchell last season led the Lions to their first Currie Cup title since 1999, but the outfit has managed just two wins in the Super Rugby competition this year and they languish in 14th position on the log.
They also lie bottom of the South African conference log and will not be able to improve their placing with just three games remaining. The Lions next travel to Newlands to take on the Stormers on June 30.
