The owner Chippa United has accused the PSL of being “scared” to host matches at the Philippi Stadium and insists the venue is one of the best in the country.

Chippa Mpengesi lashed out at the League’s decision not to allow games at the stadium, which had become a fortress for the side as they gained promotion to the top-flight last season.

Instead they have been forced to play their home games in Athlone, away from their fan base.

“The Philippi Stadium is far better than a lot of the venues that are being used in the PSL this season.” Mpengesi says. “I think the person from the PSL who came to inspect the venue looked at the shacks around it and got scared. Philippi is a world-class training venue that was renovated just a few years ago for the World Cup.

“We understand the issue around night games and that the lighting is not good enough for television, we accept that, but that does not mean we could not play our day games there.

“We feel the decision of the PSL is robbing out fans of the opportunity to watch their local side in the PSL. The Athlone Stadium is far for them to travel. For us, it feels like our home-ground advantage is not being utilised.”

Mpengesi says they have been in contact with the PSL over the issue and are awaiting another inspection team to visit: “We have written many letters to the PSL and they say they will come and have another look. We are not sure when.

“We are not enjoying it at the Athlone Stadium and as soon as the PSL approves the venue, we will go back to Philippi.”

Chippa have a 40-year lease in Philippi, but the PSL have said that until improvements are made in a number of areas, including the broadcast and other media facilities, ticketing area, meeting rooms and security, games cannot be played there. Mpengesi says he now believes these issues have been rectified.
