Manchester United were dumped out of the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday after a 3-2 aggregate loss to Real Madrid at Old Trafford.

United took the lead on the night early in the second half at Old Trafford thanks to a Sergio Ramos own goal to go 2-1 up on aggregate following the 1-1 draw at the Bernabeu.

However Nani was red carded after a high tackle on Alvaro Arbeloa, which allowed Real a way back into the tie. They took full advantage thanks to two quick goals from Luka Modric and United old boy Cristiano Ronaldo to give the Galacticos a 2-1 win on the night.

The Red Devils almost took the lead 21 minutes in, but Nemanja Vidic's header from a Ryan Giggs corner hit the post and the rebound hit Danny Welbeck's shins before rolling into the hands of Diego Lopez.

Gonzalo Higuain put the ball into the Manchester net on 33 minutes but the away goal was ruled out after Ramos was adjudged to have fouled Robin van Persie when heading the ball down into his team-mate's path.

Sir Alex Ferguson's men went straight down the other end and Van Persie stung the fingers of Lopez from the left of the area, before the Madrid keeper denied Welbeck the follow-up strike.

The hosts went ahead on 48 minutes when Nani refused to give up on a ball that was rolling out of play and his cross was diverted at goal by Welbeck, taking a crucial deflection off Ramos and over the goal-line.

However, the tie turned on 56 minutes when Nani had a very high foot going in for a challenge with Arbeloa and the referee Cuneyt Cakir brandished a straight red card, much to the fury of the Ferguson and the entire home crowd.

The Red Devils tried to halt the wave of attacks but their defence was breached on 66 minutes when substitute Modric fired in off the post from outside the box.

Ronaldo got a goal against his former team-mates when he slid in a Higuain cross at the back post three minutes later.

United then required two goals to go through and they responded well. Lopez had to be at his best to deny Michael Carrick and Van Persie, before pulling off a fantastic stop to claw out Vidic's late header.

Madrid could have made the scoreline more comfortable but De Gea denied Ronaldo on two occasions, while Kaka saw an effort hit the post and rebound into the arms of the United custodian.
