Bahrain’s Al Muharraq beat nine-man Al Wasl 5-4 on penalties to take the GCC Champions League crown and deny Diego Maradona his first silverwear as a manager on Sunday.
After winning the first leg 3-1 in Bahrain, Maradona was confident of claiming the title. But Al Muharraq closed the gap with a header from Jamal Abraro in the ninth minute. Minutes later, Al Wasl goalkeeper Majed Naser was sent off for head butting an Al Muharraq player.
Yasser Salim drew Al Wasl level for a 4-2 aggregate lead with a long strike in the 45th. But Al Muharraq answered with two second-half goals to draw even at 4-4 on aggregate.
The match went to penalties and Al Muharraq sealed the win when keeper Abdullah al-Kaby blocked a shot by Mubarak Hassan.
