Chippa beat Santos to earn PSL spot
Chippa United gained Premier Soccer League status at Santos' expense by beating their Cape neighbours 4-3 in a play-off decider on Saturday.
The Chilli Boys, who needed a point for their second straight promotion, prevailed through strikes from Philani Dlamini, Andile Mbenyane, William Thwala and Mfundo Shumana, while Eleazar Rodgers and Tyren Arendse netted for the People's Team at Philippi Stadium.
Santos, top tier champions in 2002, drop down to the National First Division.
United started the contest brightly, racing to a 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes. Dlamini drew first blood as he fired home 10 minutes in from close range before Mbenyane struck on the rebound after goalkeeper Pa Dembo Touray parried a shot by substitute Thwala.
Santos, though, fought back as South Africa striker Rodgers buried a header in the 30th minute, before veteran midfielder Arendse rattled the net with a stunning volley three minutes before the interval.
A tense second stanza opened up late on as Thwala lobbed Touray after pouncing on a weak back-pass by ex-Bafana Bafana star Nasief Morris in the 75th minute.
One-time Ajax Cape Town player Shumana, a replacement for Mxolisi Ntshingila, added a fourth six minutes later with a composed finish in the area.
Rodgers, a target of PSL giants Sundowns, completed his brace from the spot in the 88th minute, following a handball by Gift Sithole, but it was too little too late for the hapless visitors.
