A sneak preview to the PSL
THE "new coaches on the block" are expected to show their hands ahead of the new Premier Soccer League season at the Gauteng Cup tournament tomorrow.
Until this point, not a lot could be made of the new mentors: Kaizer Chiefs' Stuart Baxter, Zeca Marques at Moroka Swallows and Wits' Antonio Lopez Habas.
However, supporters will have a sneak preview of what to expect from their teams and the new coaches when the inaugural Gauteng Cup gets under way at the Lucas Moripe stadium tomorrow.
The first semifinal match between Supersport and Wits kicks off at 10am, the second between Chiefs and Swallows is at midday, and the final will be at 5pm.
The spotlight will be on new Amakhosi recruits Morgan Gould, Siboniso Gaxa and Eric Mathoho. - more than Baxter.
Facing a selection poser in defence, Baxter admitted he will juggle his team to afford as many of his players an opportunity to play as possible.
Swallows are pretty much an open book, having signed only Felix Obada thus far.
"We are not signing new players ." Marques said.
"We have a squad of 27 players, players who finished second in the league last season. They have matured and gained experience.
"We have two players for each position. And so we cannot just sign players for the sake of signing.
"Our striker [Siyabonga Nomvethe] won the top scorer award last season . defensively we were solid as we conceded less goals, while our goalkeeper [Greg Etafia] was in line for the top goalkeeper's award. We have faith in the team."
Wits will parade their new signings, which include former Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena, Tenashe Nengomasha, Tlou Molekwane and Matthew Pattison, while Supersport should give a run to new players Bevan Fransman and Roscoe Petersen.
