More clubs eye Rantie
THE race for Bafana Bafana striker Tokelo Rantie is hotting up, with new interest in the player received from Portugal and Turkey.
Orlando Pirates have been trying to get hold of Rantie's Swedish club, IFK Hasselholm, but with officials attending the 2012 European Championships in Poland and Ukraine, they have so far been unsuccessful.
They are keen to submit an offer for the player to tie him down for next season as a strike partner for Benni McCarthy.
But in the meantime there has been firm interest shown by top Swedish sides Helsingborg and Malmo, with the latter particularly keen having studied DVDs of his spell with Pirates last season.
Compatriot May Mahlangu's Helsingborg are the current champions of Sweden and will be playing in the Champions League in the 2012-13 season, while Malmo were league winners in 2010.
And now The Times understands that clubs in Turkey and Portugal have also made contact with the player's agent about the 21-year-old's availability. It has also emerged that Rantie was meant to return to Hasselholm in March for the start of the new Swedish season, but was able to extend his stay at Pirates to the end of the season.
Having played such a pivotal role in their title success, it is no wonder then that Pirates are now desperate to keep him, having initially been willing to release him back to Sweden three months ago.
