Barcelona have terminated the contract of midfielder Alexander Hleb by mutual consent, the club confirmed on Wednesday.

The Belarus playmaker joined the Catalans from Arsenal in 2008, but he has failed to earn a regular role at the Nou Camp and subsequently spent time on loan at Stuttgart, Birmingham City and Wolfsburg.

The 30-year-old's contract with Barca was initially set to expire in June of this year, but the player and club have agreed to bring that agreement to a premature end.

"Barcelona and the Belarusian player have reached an agreement for the early termination of the contract tying the player to the club, which would normally have ended on June 30th, 2012," a statement from the club said.

It is believed Hleb is now set to take his career over to Greece, with Olympiakos reportedly leading the race to secure his services.
